Acupuncture can relieve symptoms of some physical and psychological conditions and may encourage the patient's body to heal and repair itself. It works by stimulating the nerves in skin and muscle and can help with a range of problems, such as increasing the body's release of natural painkillers (endorphin and serotonin).
The method typically involves inserting fine needles through the skin. These are left in position briefly, sometimes with manual or electrical stimulation. The number of needles varies but may be only two or three.
At Active Life Osteopathy we sometimes use acupuncture to help relieve pain. It’s commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, particularly in the back, shoulders, neck and legs.
It is important to understand that acupuncture does have measurable effects on the body, even though we cannot explain them all in detail. You do not have to believe in it for it to work!
